I have another confession to make. I think I have a problem, I can’t stop listening to this Lauv song. I thought it was a phase but it’s been a year.
I guess it’s not really that big of a problem. I mean I run an indie music blog so there’s that. And also this song is from 13 Reasons Why which does not give it the most ice cold indie purist resume of all time, but like, it slaps right?
Sorry, not sorry. Sometimes the most indie of us need a reprieve. Here’s some more bangers for the road.
A friend asked me this recently, this article definitely isn’t about me. I have this friend who loves indie music but lately all he seems to want to listen to is After Hours which is such an absolute banger that if combined with the right amount of gravity could literally start a black hole (if you’re a scientist don’t comment on this I don’t need your shit). Does this make him “not indie”?
Although The Weeknd is clearly tight with indie tastemakers the Safdie Brothers, After Hours has 146M+ listens on Spotify and 25M listens on YouTube, so we can deduce the song itself is not indie. But how about my friend?
Well,
To my friend out there, you CAN STILL be indie and like whatever you want bro. Even Drake (I guess). NOTE: I was going to link that last sentence to the infamous annual softest rappers in the game list, but I guess the link got taken down so what are you gonna do.
So let’s just straight vibe to the 2:10 mark and then the 3:02 mark, the two hardest drops of the year.
And while we’re on the subject, let’s go ahead and recognize 2 other absolute heaters keeping our spirits alive during these trying times:
The Box – Roddy Ricch
This technically came out late last year blah blah blah whatever. This song is straight up defining this year, thanks partially to TikTok I think. Game recognize game and indie or not this one slaps.
Find My Way – DaBaby
Let’s ride.
Anyways the point is I gotta throw some love to the mainstream jams every once in a while so GET OVER IT. I’m never gonna punish great artists for being successful, all love. But to be clear this article is about my friend, not me. Play us out Arizona Zervas:
